Probus Club – Visit To Otter Brewery


Club members and wives had an evening trip by minibus to the award-winning Otter Brewery in the Blackdown Hills at Luppitt near Honiton. After sampling a few ales that Otter Brewery produce, they were treated to a guided tour of the facilities, where Keith, the Head Brewer, explained the whole process of brewing ale. He said there are only four main ingredients: malted barley; hops; yeast; water. The most important ingredient is the quality of the water which makes a significant contribution to the taste of the finished beer. Their water is drawn from the River Love, used for brewing and then recycled back to the river via willow beds.

Their beer cellar was constructed underground to save the need for refrigeration. It was constructed in 2007, when it won the South West Eco Building of the Year Award.   They have won many awards since then including national awards this year and last year as the best UK lager from an independent brewer. During their peak summer season, a team of 33 staff produce in excess of 32,000 pints of beer and lager each day.

After the tour, our club members and wives had light refreshments and an unlimited supply of beers and lagers to sample.
